What Doxycycline is and what it is used for:

Doxycycline is used to treat different types of infections including:

  • Respiratory infections (chest, lung or nose)
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Acne (pimples)
  • Eye infections
  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  • Malaria when Chloroquine is not effective
  • It can also be used to prevent certain infections.

Do not take Doxycycline:

  • If you’re allergic to Doxycycline, other tetracyclines, or any other component of this medicine.
  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

Warnings and precautions:

Talk to your doctor about all your medical conditions before taking this medicine including:

  • If you are going to be exposed to strong sunlight or UV light.
  • If you have myasthenia gravis.
  • If you have liver or kidney problems.
  • If you have systemic lupus erythematosus SLE.
  • If you have porphyria, a blood disorder.
  • If you ever had severe diarrhea after prolonged antibiotic use.
  • Taking this medicine for longer than recommended can lead to a second infection.

Possible side effects:

  • Stop using this product and seek immediate medical help if you develop rash; hives; itching; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; wheezing; tightness in the chest or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing, or talking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat.
  • Talk to your doctor if you experience:
  • Severe bloody diarrhea
  • Fever, swollen lymph nodes or skin rash
  • Very severe headache which may be associated with visual disturbances such as blurred vision, double vision or loss of vision.

Other medicines and Doxycycline:

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking, especially:

  • Antacids
  • Medicines for epilepsy (fits)
  • Warfarin
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Retinoids

How to take Doxycycline :

  • This medicine is not recommended in children younger than 8 years if age.
  • Take as indicated by your doctor.
  • Take with a full glass of water.
  • If it causes stomach upset, take with food.
  • The usual dosing is 100-200 mg daily depending on the infection.

How to store Doxycycline :

  • Store at room temperature 68 to 77°F (20 to 25°C).
  • Keep this medicine out of reach of children.
  • Do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the package.
  • The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.

*Dosage form and route of administration of Doxycycline 100 mg capsules and 10 mg/ml syrup should be prescribed according to therapeutic indication and disease severity of each individual patient.
